AOTA and Backpack Safety

Dear Colleague:

If you work with children, you know that when it comes to backpacks, you really do need to "Pack it Light, Wear it Right."

Each September, AOTA members, students, and other health professionals join forces to alert the public, particularly teachers, parents, and children, about the dangers of overweight packs and improper fit.

....remember the rule is to ensure the backpack weighs less than 15% of body weight.

AOTA and its members have steadily had an impact on the amount of weight children are asked to carry in their backpacks. Schools are changing policies to help lighten homework loads, rolling packs are being used in some communities, and several states are reviewing legislation to limit the weight of textbooks. All of this is due to the hard work of volunteers who brought this important issue to light.

Our work does not stop here. Where wellness is concerned, there is still a great deal to be done. We invite you to join us in our effort to educate the public about the importance of backpack safety.
