Rebuilding Together preserves and revitalizes low-income houses through more than 250 local affiliates. More than 73,000 homes, usually owned by elderly or disabled homeowners, have been repaired and rehabilitated by volunteers-including occupational therapy practitioners and students who contribute their expertise and energy to home safety and home modification activities. AOTA members and Rebuilding Together have similar goals: To raise visibility for the important work we do, to be active community participants, and to promote home safety and independence. AOTA and Rebuilding Together have been building a relationship for several years. AOTA has a guide on its Web site for pursuing Level I fieldwork with Rebuilding Together, and collaborations between state occupational therapy associations and Rebuilding Together affiliates exist in cities and communities around the country. Working with Rebuilding Together is a great way to strengthen community ties and to highlight our profession's contributions to helping individuals live independently and age in place.
